[...] I look almost normal again, or at least no strong man has stepped hastily aside when he sees me coming lately. Although on the whole this crew was pretty sanguine about my close encounter with the Darwin sorter. “We’ve all done it, SN Samantha Crane told me. She was the one who told me that iron helped bruises fade faster. I started remembering to take my One-a-Days and she was right. Maybe Doc needs to recruit her. I’m just happy I’m not going to live out my life as a cross between Cyclops and a gargoyle on Notre Dame. [...]

Yeah, just a little 6-hour workshop spread over two weeks. They're a good group. It's not for credit and it's during their off hours, so it amazes me half of them haven't dropped out.

Dana,

Am I to understand from the reply to Jessica's mom that you are doing a writers' workshop while on board the Munro? How wonderful!

And what a lucky group of writers!

Jim says to say hello!

Take care,

Dana,
That is a great story about the
doc. It is great to read all the stories and see all the pics. It makes it easier to understand and realize life on water.
Thanks a bunch,
Diane from Kentucky(Jessica's Mom)

I'll pass on running into anything, thanks just the same. Still...Doc and his family may want to look at Bowling Green as a nice place to settle when his time is done...we can always use extraordinary medical care. What do you say, Doc, Mrs. Doc??? Kentucky has lots to offer.

I have witnessed the raising and lowering of the flag on various military installations. It is moving.

There is a Firefly topic on the Danamaniacs' website, Syntha. I've posted to it.

And Cathy, if you'd like to come on board and run full tilt into the Darwin sorter, as sure as I'm sitting here Papa Doc will provide you every care. But I don't recommend it.

Internet access is slow and satellite television is intermittent underway, so I've only been hearing about the Virginia tech shootings second and third hand. I'm having a hard time handling it even so. When we moor for a port call, we raise the jackstaff in the bow and run up our flag at the exact moment our forward line goes over the stanchion on the pier. Last port call we flew our flag at half-staff in honor of the Virginia Tech dead. The process is to raise the flag to the top of the jackstaff and then lower it to halfway and there it sits until we get underway again, at which time we raise it to the top of the jackstaff and then lower it all the way. It was very moving.

Dana,

You have to write a book about this experience! Truly, the stories you are telling are amazing.

It's been a hard week for the U.S. I have been able to escape the awfulness by coming here and reading about people who are making a difference, who are protecting us...mostly sight unseen, who are heroes.

Dana, thanks so much for the blogs. Are you even aware of the amazing gift you are giving us all?

Now...to important matters...if I'm very good and mind my manners well can Doc be my doc?

Have you seen the series Firefly? There was only 1 season, but the DVD sales were so good that they made a motion picture - Serenity. If you've seen it, what did you think? If not I highly recommend it. My friend Freya who works at the AK State Library in Juneau got me hooked on it. Syntha
