Here in Montana, we don't see too many Coast Guard ships, but it makes me proud that such fine young women and men are out there looking after all of us and the rest of the world. I've always known they were special, but it was great to see them at work in the world and to hear about their adventures. Thanks, Dana. And a special blessing on the Coasties.

I wish you could hear them talk about you, Erika. They understand (and they made me understand) that it's part of the job for which they volunteered, but that doesn't mean they don't miss you every minute of every day.

And it was my very great privilege. Thank you!

As the eldest daughter of XO Stephen Rothchild, it means alot to me that you wrote and posted this blog. The men miss their families immensely, and we miss them just as much. It definitely goes both ways. Thank you for letting us follow their journey through you. It makes it seem as if we're closer than we really are by knowing what goes on in their lives away from us. It is appreciated more than you know.

Thanks for the photo, Tom! It was one of those days that will live forever in my memory. In everyone's memory, I think.

Enjoyed your trip to th orphanage. My d'ter worked in a home for AK abused and orphaned kids on Kodiak for a summer, then back for a year between college and grad schools. Good work being done there, too. And that's how she ended up back in Anchorage as a child pschycologist!

For Mary, some of the crew were on duty that day, for some it wasn't their thing. And for others? I'm guessing they just couldn't bear it.

And thanks, Shel.
