[...] You may remember a feature I did on marine pilots in Southcentra Alaska for the Dec/Jan issue of Alaska magazine. Well, it just won “Best Feature” in the annual contest presided over by Alaska Professional Communicators to award excellence in journalism. This seems to be my year for prizes (see here for Governer’s Arts award for Artist of the Year). Go here to read “On the Bridge.” You’ll have to buy a copy if you want to see the cool photos, though. [...]

It's 20 inches tall, and it wouldn't fit into my suitcase so I had to hand carry it home. I spent the whole two flights in a perfect sweat of fear that I was going to chip the glaze.

The coffee is terrific, by the way. Thanks again!

Aloha Dana! Your award is fabulous! I had to check the dictionary to see exactly what kind of fish the sculpin handles were! LOL! And the Opihi piko (bellybutton) is great! Just how tall is it anyway? You probably gotta do some room or at least shelf rearranging, huh? Congrats again on the award.

Hey Dana, this is awesome! Even a belly button! Can see why it might not have fit in the suitcase, but oh boy, what a truly one-of-its-kind award and designed by a Homer artist, no less! Never knew anyone with one of these things before! Still waiting on the photos, but hope to get them this week and will forward them on. -K
