Munro flightdeck and Alaska Ranger crew Photo of my ship at work, saving lives, in this case the crew of the Alaska Ranger, which sank yesterday (3/23) in the Bering Sea. Read the story here. Imagine having your boat sink out from under your feet on the Bering Sea in March and taking to the lifeboats and the water, and then have the helo whiz up and light you up with their spotlight, and then Munro hoving up over the horizon. That would come under the heading of a good day.

The next part of the story (3/25) about the Alaska Ranger rescue.

Scary stories from the survivors (3/26). They were really lucky. Note on April 4th: Of course, “lucky” also means that our tax dollars support the US Coast Guard. Money well spent, as those guys in the water would surely agree. I remember when I was on Alex Haley one of the fishermen said over the radio, “Good to know you guys are out there.” No kidding.

The crew testifies. Twenty to twenty-five foot seas.

Here’s a link to Senator Lisa Murkowski’s remarks on the Alaska Ranger rescue on the floor of the US Senate on March 31st.

    Great interviews!

  2. Dana says:

Thanks. Believe it or not, they were fun to do. Both interviewers appeared to have actually read Prepared for Rage, and trust me, interviewers don’t always read the book. I have noticed that radio is way better about that than TV.

  3. Deb Varney says:

Happy birthday! I love your books. I’ve read 15 so far. I’m looking forward to more.

    Thanks, Deb!

    Hi Dana
I’m bm2 Matt Hendricks’ mom. I loved the book Prepared for Rage. However I was a bit take back when he got killed. A mothers worst nightmare. But I still enjoyed the book. Thanks Caryn

    Hi Dana,

Have you had a chance to see Senator Murkowski’s (presume he’s from Alaska) Floor Statement to the President of the United States Senate about the Munro sea rescue of the Alaska Ranger crew? Capt. Lloyd forwarded it to crew family members & my daughter-in-law forwarded it to the rest of our family. Very full detail of the circumstances and very well deserved praise for the Munro crew.

    Regards, Carol G

PS… enjoyed the latest Silk & Song chapter. Keep them coming, I hope. Your flair for characterization is quite enjoyable.

  7. Dana says:

Caryn, I was sort of expecting your post (and a lot of others), but I’m glad you managed to enjoy the book anyway. Carol, I hadn’t heard the floor speech, I’ll seek it out on the web at once and post a link to it. The Alaska Ranger rescue is an amazing story, and I think emblematic of the heart and soul of the US Coast Guard. I’m so proud of “my” ship.

  8. Inge Kutt Lewis says:

Did you notice that the flap copy of “Prepared for Rage” states that you spent two months on Alex Haley instead of Munro?

I loved the book! Thank you.

  9. Dana says:

Oh my yes, Inge, I noticed, and so did you, and so did a whole bunch of other people. And that wasn’t the only error. From now on, I have asked my editor to please run the flap copy by me before the book goes to press.

    And thank you!
