Beth Blakely at VibrantNation asked me to write a top ten list of my favorite books so they could post it on their website.
I went her one better and gave her a “top ten list of books that make me want to quit writing because I’ll never write anything this good so why am I bothering?” Go here to see what made my list.

Dana,
I like your books much more than your list of top 10. Keep writing!! Are you ever going to do another Liam book?
Heresy! But thank you, Karen. Yes, there will be a 5th Liam Campbell novel, and you can go here

for a little taste. It won’t be published until 2010, though.
Great list! “Trustee from the Toolroom” is an old, old favorite, and your recommendation of “Gate to Women’s Country” (although I liked “Grass” better) convinced me to look up some of the other things on your list that I had not already. I ordered “Monte Walsh” and “March of Folly” and was looking for a used copy of “Lion’s Paw” when I discovered that a company called A.W.INK, Inc. is about to reprint it. According to their fulfillment department, it’s supposed to be available in about three weeks. Their e-mail address is awinkinc@gmail.com in case you want to investigate it.
Finally, THANKS SO MUCH for the Kate Shugack novels! They were recommended by a friend and this is my first time through the series: I finished “Breakup” last night and the rest of them are sitting on the dresser! I can hardly wait …
WHOOP!! Thanks for that very good piece of news, John! I’ve wanted to give The Lion’s Paw away to every kid in my family, and now maybe I’ll be able to give it away to the grandkids, too.
You will love Monte Walsh, wonderful writing, wonderful character, wonderful setting, the best book I’ve read in the past year. And you will be, hmm, frustrated and delighted in equal parts by The March of Folly.
And thank you so much for the compliment!
How about Theodore Honey in “No Highway”?A true Shute hero.
I have wondered if Trustee was the inspiration for Hillerman’s “Finding Moon”
Thanks for the list of 10. I love it that you read such time-tested authors. Never doubt that your stuff will be right up there at the top of every one else’s list.
How about hunky David Anderson in In The Wet?
I thought I’d read everything Tony Hillerman had ever written. Off to find a copy of Finding Moon now…
And that’s pretty good company you’ve got me keeping, yikes. But thanks!
Jack Schaffer and A. B. Guthrey are ” western writers ” everyone should be reading . Time is killing some of these great books as libraries cull their shelves to make room for ” NEW ” books . I understand this but I mourn the loss suffered by the new reader who has no way of finding these hidden gems !
Just a followup to my previous comment: I got my reproduction copy of “The Lion’s Paw” from A.W.Ink Inc. a week ago and it’s a lovely job: they did an especially nice job reproducing the old plates. Plus I noticed the new edition mentioned here:

Thanks for pointhing out this great book!
Excellent, and thank you so much for the link!
