Remember when I posted about the Celtic a while back?
Brad Hughes the artist, is having two shows of his work in Homer this week, one of them at the Kachemak Gear Shed, which has to be like the coolest venue for a show of marine art ever, a place where you can buy a .30-06, a set of Carhartt’s, and a sleeve of lids for half-pound flats all at one go. Brad ripped my painting out of my cold dead hands to display it in the show, after swearing to me that there would be a big, red SOLD sticker on it. The Homer News has a story about Brad and his work and the shows here.
And how timely is this? A photograph of Barb holding a copy of A Deeper Sleep in front of the convention center in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

No box at ‘the first time I saw Jimmy,’ so I am commenting here. What an amazing piece of writing! So many emotions washed over me reading it. Nostalgia, regret for missed opportunities, memories of great concerts in my youth, yearning to hear great music in the great outdoors, joy at experiencing it with you. Dana, I love your books, but your Jimmy piece is truly music in words. Thanks for taking me there.
Thank you so much, Ann! You’re the first person to comment on that. It was one of the single most amazing evenings I have ever spent.
From below I would like to solicit your list for the Coos Bay library . They have a news letter and I’d like to have it print a top 10 list each issue . Will check-out some of the authors I haven’t read . Can’t believe ” Monte Walsh ” is a new read for you .
I’m laid low and housebound by rhinovirus; a perfect time to reread. The halibut heart in Killing Grounds, is that based on a real happening?I seem to remember that the puppy snatch by an eagle was real.
Thank you for keeping me company while I cough.
Erma Lawton
Re Palin
Will you please comment on the candidate? I’m a Democrat, and I have an opinion, but I want some information from Alaskans. Can she possibly be that perfect? Are we not allowed to question or doubt? Or must we all bow?
From a Danamaniac and lover of all things Shugak (and still–a Democrat)
Sorry about the delay in replying, folks, I’m on vacation in Ireland and just logged on for the first time since Monday.
Ed, please do use the list for your library and anything else you find it useful for.
Erma, the halibut killing and resulting heart incident is taken right out of my childhood. I had nightmares for weeks.
Ann, you are an American citizen. You don’t just have the right to question everything you see and hear, you have a DUTY to do so. And I’m pretty sure we’re constitutionally forbidden to bow our heads to anyone. That said, I’m a writer, not a politician. Keep reading, keep thinking, keep talking to people whose opinions you respect. Try not to get caught up in the current media hysteria. That’ll help. [day after PS–I recommend Alaska political blogger Andrew Halcro’s site for sensible, well-written and well-informed commentary on Governor Palin and all Alaskan matters, go here to check it out: http://www.andrewhalcro.com/blog/
About the halibut heart - figured it was true. As you have said, you don’t have to make up this stuff.
Enjoy Ireland for all of us homebound. We will watch for bits of green to show up in a book.
What happened to the blog entry about Sarah Palin and the 54 responses? I came here to get the link to send to someone and it is gone.
Also,(gushing fan comment) having visited Alaska this summer, I decided to re-read both your series and am loving them even more this time. Although, Hunter’s Moon did have me in tears again.
I deleted the post because it was generating too much nastiness in the way of response, from both sides of the aisle, and I’m tired of being on guard against either. Here’s the link to Alaska political blogger Andrew Halcro’s website:

His commentary is much more informed than mine.
And thanks very much for the compliment!
Yeah, there were some pretty heated responses on there. Thanks for replying so fast.
Those comments were mild in comparison to ones I deleted. Nastiness is not an end in itself. Not here, anyway. My website, my rules.
Later that same day–here’s a link to a pretty thorough and reasonably sane look at Governor Palin’s record:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5070
Thanks for answering my question and providing the website.
And as always, if you keep writing them I keep reading. Thanks .
I’m sorry to hear that discussion degenerated into a free-for-all. I thought at the time how remarkable is was that everyone was staying civilized. So much for that idea.
I intercepted the bad stuff. I just didn’t want to do that anymore. The comments that remained were civil and intelligent, and I appreciated everyone’s need to know more. Now, of course, there is all the information you could possibly want. I don’t want this website to be a place for hysteria or haranguing, but please, everyone, keep talking, keep up with the news on reputable websites, and please, please inform your vote.
Again, later that same day: A friend forwarded me this blog, written by a fellow Alaskan:

We’re having a discussion on Laurie King’s VBC and want to know if Kate uses Dr. Bronner’s Soap? and, on another note, if I made it all the way to Anchorage from New Jersey, couldn’t ya, wouldn’t ya, pretty please come to B’con in Baltimore? I’d even buy you a beer!
Sorry, I’m in Ireland at present, and I’m not trading it for Bouchercon, not even for a beer. I appreciate the offer, though–thanks!
Is Dr. Bronner’s soap the camp soap you get at REI? ‘Cause that’s what Kate was using in Play with Fire.
Oooh, you’re missing out on Baltimore, hon. Maybe someone can get you an Eat Bertha’s Mussels bumper sticker.
Dana,
When you haven’t written a character for a bit(thinking the Liam series here) how hard is it to get back into the saddle, so to speak? And how do you go about writing the next installment?
CathyO
It is hard when I’ve been living in the Kate Shugak world to shift gears into the Liam Campbell world. First I reread the first four Liam books, and then I shoulder in. There is no substitute for sweat equity, at least in the beginning.
Note to fans–I realize I’ve been laggard on blogging lately, but expect things to heat up shortly.
