In February I blogged on Jungle Red Writers about the Internet promotion campaign I put together for Whisper to the Blood. It created quite the stir among my fellow authors.
So I figured I’d edit it and amend it and add to it and tweak it and post it for sale on Kindle. Here’s the link to its page on Amazon.
It costs four bucks, and you can download it for Kindle or iPhone/ iTouch.
I have posted the introduction to the review section.
Don’t hamstring your book’s sales performance by kidding yourself that an online presence isn’t essential in today’s publishing marketplace. It is. I’ve been working on mine for fifteen years, since this website in the first of its many incarnations went up on the Internet, and last year I really ratcheted it up. Promoting Your Book Online will save you a lot of sweat equity in building your own cyberspace presence.
And for those of you who just want to read a good book and you’ve graduated to the Kindle, I present to you
Second Star
A Handful of Stars
Red Planet Run
Fire and Ice
So Sure of Death
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Better to Rest

I am the #1 fan of Dana’s…..started with her ‘Breakup’, and still going. Unfortunately the book buyer changed, and a new ager came in, so we don’t get her books anymore. Will peruse the bookstores in Anchorage.
One thing, Dana has mentioned the name ‘SHADURA’ in several of her books….just wondering if she knows/knew the family…as we’re related.
Thank you Dana, for great writing….readable for the whole family and always a good plot.
Sincerely your fan in Kodiak,
Rosabel
Thanks, Rosabel! I can’t remember where I got or even used the name “Shadura,” sorry. This is what happens after 16 books in a series.
I did sign last year at the bookstore/gift shop next to that fabulous bakery in Kodiak last February. She had all my books in print then, and had me sign stock for her. Otherwise, yes, either the Homer Bookstore (http://www.homerbookstore.com/) or the bookstores in Anchorage should be able to fill your order.
I’m glad to see that some (if not all) of your books are now available in Kindle format. Will these remain exclusive for Amazon or will you be offering electronic editions for the Sony reader?
Right now the Kindle/iPhone/iTouch is what I have time for, Elsi. I hope to do more later.
Dana,
Thank you for all the wonderful “Kate Shugak” books, and keep them coming. What is fry bread, and how do you make it?
Bonnie
Here you go, Bonnie:

I have read several of your books and really enjoyed them but have, in the last couple of years, became aware that some writers use their books as a platform to promote their personal political views. When I first started reading PREPARED FOR RAGE the part about Katrina really floored me. I had many close relatives living in New Orleans when Katrina hit and we still had refugees that we were housing, helping, ect when Rita stuck out area(Lake Charles). My house was severly damaged and my insurance didn’t want to pay and we had no electricity, water, services, fresh food, ect. for several weeks so you can say that I have some experience in both of those hurricanes. Where I live it was neighbor helping neighbor and I did not see any law enforcement officials or any other official help for a month and we did not think to blame the officials who were doing everything they could to help the helpless.( Oh I forgot, my 80 year old mother is diabetic and we were using a generator to keep her insulin refrigerated and I drove to find the National Guard to ask them to help when the generator broke down and they said they could not help.) If you want to blame someone for the Katrina fiasco maybe you could start with their DEMOCRATIC mayor who did not get the city properly evacuated,or our DEMOCRATIC governor who did nothing for days afterward,or the people still in the city who turned on even the rescuers. My son-in-law is an EMT first responder who drives an ambulance and they were waiting outside of the city to go in but could not for several days because the first ambulances in were attacked and robbed for the drugs by the criminals in the city. So even though I think President Bush could have done a better job, there was plenty of blame to go around.
And it wasn’t just the Katrina issue.
To take those constant jabs at the Bush administration when surely at least half of your readers are conservative Republicans is a disservice to your readers and not necessary to your story. So at Chapter 8 I threw the book in the trash. I still have one of your books here, A Deeper Sleep, that I haven’t read and I am not sure now if I will attempt it. Thowing away a book, especially a hardback, is not something I have ever done but I have decided that I will take my own stance on the attempted brainwashing that is going on out there. To say something disparaging about the goverment or some agency in general is one thing but when you specifically attack a President who, whatever you think of him, deserves some respect for protecting us for 8 years is another thing. So good luck with your books but you have just lost a reader.
Regretfully
Freida Koskela
Sorry you took the book that way, Freida. Best wishes.
Do your Kindle books have DRM or are they DRM free?
DRM.
Is this book still available? I can’t find it on the Amazon site and the URLs above don’t work anymore. Thanks!
No, Mary, it isn’t. Sorry!
