[Four-wheelers, aka ATVs, in Restless in the Grave, the 19th Kate Shugak novel]
This is a four-wheeler, also known as an ATV, or all-terrain vehicle.
They’re made by Suzuki, Yamaha, Polaris and Honda, among others. They are basic transportation in Bush Alaska along with snow machines and small planes. It’s how kids get to school, how hunters get to moose, and how shoppers get to the big town upriver with the big store in it. People decorate them and ride them in Fourth of July parades.
Four-wheelers work as taxis. You can stick out your thumb and hitch rides on them. When I went to Savoonga on an Operation Santa with the Alaska Air National Guard one December, every four-wheeler in the village met the Herc and ferried us to the gym.
Here’s the whole slide show from one OpSanta.
