In honor of Audiobook Month, today we’re giving away 5 copies of the audio of Restless in the Grave!
Do like this:
In the comments below, tell me why you want one. Simple as that.
Comment submissions end tonight at midnight Alaska time.
I will choose my five favorite comments tomorrow, and the five people who wrote them will win an audio copy, sent to them personally (and if I know her, immediately) by Samantha the Sensational down at Macmillan Audio.
Let your inner audio geek off the chain. Write hard and win!

Well all my best quips have been used so I can only say it has been too long since I have had Kate in my life and nothing makes boring chores flyby like doing them with an audiobook. Of course the best audiobooks are those containing Dana Stabenow word pictures, I must return to the Alaska of Kate and Dana so thanks ………..
Good morning world! Today begins my state conference of adult, community and continuing ed professionals – all who share a love of learning and teaching. One of the many things I always get while here is a new list of recommended reading/listening (we all travel quite a lot to get to rural parts of the state and region) – I had dinner last night with six people, five of whom had read all of Dana’s books – ALL of them! I have a feeeling I might see some competition today here, because I told them about the giveaway…ha!! We made a pact that if someone in our group wins wins, s/he would pass the set on to each other – and at the end of the experience, we’ll donate it to a library in the winner’s region. Well, this is what we do and love – pass on the love of reading and learning!
Dear Dana, I love your books. I also love my life, so please help me keep safe and stop me reading at the wheel as I chase around after the family… I drive a British car with the usual manual gear box and that makes turning paper pages really hard when I’m driving on the motorway. Thank you love Pippa x
I would like the audiobook because I commute to work by bus and so am in transit 1.5 hours each day. I have found listening to books instead of music a most excellent use of my commute time. The library is an excellent source for me, but I also like to collect my favourites, and since you and Kate are a favourite…
I work at a library and love listening to and recommending audiobooks. I would listen to “Restless in the Grave” myself and then donate it to the library so that other patrons who enjoy your books could experience it, too. We have a blind patron, Elaine, who reads many of the same authors I do and I’m always looking for new books to recommend to her. Not long ago, I purchased “A Night Too Dark” and donated it to the library. So far it is the only Kate Shugak audiobook we have. I do ask the senior librarian to buy my favorites sometimes but I can only do that so often before she chases me out of her office, yelling about funds…
I love the Kate series. By having the audio book I could knit and listen to the book at the same time. I could also cook and do the dishes without the worry of dropping my book in the food or the sink full of water. I am never without a book where ever I go and my kids tell me I need to “get with it” and use audio books. You could help me accomplish this by sending Kate my way.
Growing up, I read in a closet with the light on so I wouldn’t get caught staying up too late. I read a cereal box at breakfast if no book was available. I could read while washing the dishes or doing my ironing. And this was all before audio books! There are books … and then there are BOOKS. I used to keep all books I had – but now in my 60′s I only keep the ones I will read and re-read. Your books are OF COURSE in that category. I drive East to help my parents on a regular basis and listen to your books on every trip. I started with books on cassette and then had to upgrade to cd’s. Help! And thanks for all the enjoyment you bring to so many. And thanks for being young enough to have many more writing years.
Hi, I am listening to Restless In the Grave and enjoying it. I am having trouble getting past the pronunciation of Adak…has it changed since we lived in Alaska?
If I spoke French I wouldn’t have a problem finding literature, but alas! All the local bookstores sell only French literature. (No surprise, I am in France after all!) I would love an audiobook to listen to, as I am almost certain it is in English… please correct me if I’m wrong!
To Susie: Uh-oh. It’s long A-dack (rhymes with tack), accent on the A. Did Marguerite get it wrong? That would be a rare occurrence, for which I’ll have to give her much grief.
I would love an audio book, since becoming a stay at home mom, I spend quite a bit of time running the kids here and there and the audio books really help me keep up on my reading! Especially during my 3 hour trek on the lawn mower!
Love listening to your books makes my chores fly
I would love a copy of your book! Your Kate mysteries are a great treat.
I’ve never listened to an audiobook, and I can’t imagine a better way to start than with a Kate book–especially if I could listen in the plane en route to Seattle to meet the cruise I’m finally getting to take to–YAY–Alaska in August. I mean, really, how can you top that?
I love reading your books Dana (just finished Second Star on my Kindle phone app), but nothing brings them to life like the audio rendition. Marguerite Gavin is an excellent talent and she embodies Kate in my mind. I normally read the book and then listen to the audio when the next book is released to refresh my memory. Winning the audio book would really be a treat.
I have always enjoyed the Kate series. Kate’s determination and resilience when bad things happen give me a kick in the pants when I need it. Her love and relationship with Mutt almost make this confirmed cat lover want a dog. I would love to have my own audio book so that as I take my summer travels, I am taking an old friend along with me.
We’ve become part of the legion of evacuees from the huge High Park fire here in Colorado. Audiobooks have become “story telling time” occasionally, for small puddles of folks who have gone from Kate-with-the-bear-after-her speed, to full stop as our lives are on hold until the brilliant crews make it safe to go home again.
So. I am not sure if I can make a good case, but here goes. I have to drive between Klamath Falls, OR , and Reno, NV. A lot. Not really because I want to, most of the time. But. The drive is 278 miles through some of the most open, beautiful, high-desert country you’ll ever see. I see deer, pronghorn, coyotes, cattle (lots of cattle), and literally millions of different birds depending on the season. I know it’s winter when the eagles return to Eagle Lake. I know it’s spring when snow geese move through and the sandhills and redwing blackbirds return. Summer is time for pelicans and western meadowlarks, and fall is time for migrants moving through, and it’s amazing. For about three hours of the drive, what I don’t see a lot of is traffic. Or people. This part of the world is almost as far from an interstate as you can get in the contiguous US. After almost four years of this drive, I know about every one of the twists, turns, and curves on the way. Radio stations are virtually non-existant, and my husband is the one with the satellite radio that he uses for his drives between Klamath Falls and Portland, OR. So. I listen to podcasts, books, music to keep me company. Our library here does not have too many audiobooks, so those tend to be few and far between. I’d love to have some of my favorite characters, i.e., Kate and Jim and Mutt (OK, and the rest of the gang, too), keep me company for a while on my drive. It’s always good to spend some time with friends on a drive, right? I am sure listening to “Restless” would take me from the high desert basins with their saline lakes and abandoned cabins slumping into the sage and all of the ranges separating them with their scrubby trees and snowy passes all the way to Alaska, metaphorically speaking. Unless I turn my car north while listening one day and don’t stop. I’m also sure I’d listen to the story and then pass it on, too. That would be only fair to share. Thanks for the great writing, Dana—after reading it, I’d like to listen to it some, too.
I love Kate and love to lose myself in her drama. It’s so much more interesting than mine. I dream constantly of Alaska and all things Alaskan. I hope to get there before my glaucoma gets worse but meds are helping for now. I would treasure an audiobook and play it often to give my eyes a rest (but only for awhile as I am an avid reader, maybe even a rabid reader). I hope your books keep coming because they keep me going.
Good morning,
Sadly, I am writing this in Astoria, OR instead of Kodiak, AK. The Coast Guard has finally used the shoe horn to pry me off of the rock! While traveling I was looking for one of your audio books but the B&N in Bellingham did not have you on their shelves!! I will keep looking, you are one of my favorites!! Hugs to you!!
I’ve been working my way through the Liam Campbell books and loving every one of them. The humor is always great and I love the way you handle the love scenes between Wy and Liam. I’m also a wannabe pilot and the flying scenes are very real. A friend and I find your books on audio and listen to them on long drives. The only problem with that is sometimes we’re laughing so hard it’s hard to drive with tears running down your face. Keep on writing, please!!
PLEASE send me the audio version of RESTLESS IN THE GRAVE. I love listening to audio books on my way to work because I cannot find a decent radio station to listen to! That’s sad! Love your stuff!
I was introduced to Kate and company by a dear friend from Kenai. I have been summering in Alaska for the past 14 years and took this summer off and stayed in Colorado. My friend has passed away and I would love to listen to Restless in the Grave while attending to my yardwork and remembering my “Alaska Mom”.
Hi Dana! Well, I love the Kate series and am excited to start the Liam ones when I’m through (I named my son Liam!) — I lived in Petersburg for 2 years, and immediately fell in love. Some of my heart still resides in Alaska (in several places–Chickaloon, Juneau, Cordova, PSG, Wrangell, Kake) and reading your words brings me back “home.” I can almost smell the sea when Kate is on a fishing boat; I can hear the eagles. And though I moved home from Alaska to marry my sweetie and be close to family in 2009, Chopper Jim ignites that college-girl flame in me! Hubba hubba! Until I am able to get back at least for a visit, I can enjoy the rainy days in my Xtratufs here in MN (like today–the clouds are hanging particularly low, making me feel delightfully socked in!) The only thing that could make that better would be listening to a captivating Kate tale!! Please pick me & bring back a rush of fond AK memories!
Thanks for the fun giveaway!
I have to admit, many of the writers above have more interesting arguments. I have all of the Kate books in hardcover or paperback. I’ve never seriously considered any other media. But I’m getting to the age where arthritis affects my ability to hold up a book for hours at a time and I really need stronger glasses. Maybe it is time to try a different way to enjoy a good read. What better way to start than with Restless in the Grave.
I simply cannot think of two people I’d rather have in my car than Kate and Liam… well, okay, the others can come, too, but they may have to ride in the trunk.
It is a 4 hour drive to visit my daughter. I would love to have this
book on audio. I started reading the Kate novels when they first came
out and have shared them with others. I’ve kept last 3 in hardback for
rereading purposes…….wish I had kept them all. Oh well! Thank you
for writing these books. You have kept me well entertained for years.
Because I came to this site to buy Blood will tell, as I will anyway, but absolutely cannot resist trying for a freebie. I live in France, great country but not my first language, so love audio books and ebooks in english. Fingers crossed!
I love your books just finished, Restless in the Grave, super as always. Would love to share it with my husband of 51 years, he enjoys books on audio. We were married in Palmer, AK, in 1960 and spent our honeymoon at Chitna, makes me think of area around Niniltna. The ghost was on the old building as now and we had Spam (bought at the only store) sandwiches, as a grizzly mama and her cub ate blueberries in the bushes near our car. Keep up the great work loved Kate and Liam working together, and now cell phones in the bush.
Yeara ago, when I read the first Kate Shugak book, I thought I would just see if this author really knew Alaska. I lived there for thirteen years in the 60s and 70s. References to Blazo Boxes and Visqueen told me this was a real Alaskan writing! Have enjoyed them ever since but haven’t read or heard this one.
I would like the book so my hubsand (Alan) can share my in my love for Kate and Mutt and Alaska. Alan is not a reader — but has listened to the few Kate books that I have on tape and I know that he will love this one.
Thank You
My mom and I met you at the Poisoned Pen when you were releasing Restless in the Grave. She is 92 and has a hard time reading the printed word. She loves all of your books and struggles to read them with a magnifying glass. An audiobook would be perfect for her. I’d love to give it to her as a gift!
OK, attempt #3 to sway an author. I could praise your work, but you would just smile and say “thanks”. I could express how your books makes “Kate” a real person we all want to know, but you have heard that before. So perhaps the best way to sway an author is to express what emotions it makes me have. I cried (while getting a pedi) when Mutt was shot, that was a hard one to explain to the technician. I also got very pissed at Chopper Jim, when I thought he cheated on Kate, still not convinced he didn’t. Laughed till my jaw hurt when the jet engine fell on Kate’s place.
I keep reminding myself that the characters are NOT REAL, however you bring them to life. So, like Kate you don’t want the credit for your actions, but TOUGH, cause you have anyway.
My request is on behalf of Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library on the Big Island of Hawai’i, where I work. We have many of the Kate Shugak series on paper; there are none in our collection in compact disc format. As a matter of fact, there are no compact discs of the series statewide, although two of the books are available as phonotapes and two as electronic resources. Although we’re a part of the only statewide library system in America, allowing us access to the holdings of 50 other libraries, there still aren’t that many audio copies of any books unless they’re huge best sellers.
The first Kate Shugak novel I read was last year’s Though Not Dead. I liked it so much that I went back to book one and read the series up to that point. (I haven’t read Restless in the Grave because I need to read at least one Liam Campbell book first; sorry to say I haven’t yet) and b) In the last year I’ve increased the number of books I listen to instead of read to about 50 percent of the total and would love to include the latest Kate book
Thank you for considering this request. If we do luck out and get a copy, I intend (selfishly) to be the first person to check it out. There would be many more after me since it would be the only CD of the series in the state, and available to every Kate fan (or potential Kate fan) therein.
I would really like to win. I’ve enjoyed your books. Having one in audio would give me the opportunity to enjoy more of your books quicker. Currently on vacation and it’s been a little difficult to read. With an audiobook, I would be about to listen to your book while relaxing by the pool or beach.
I have known And vicariously been to Alaska through meeting Congressman Young, his wife and family as the friend who introduced me to my husband was his Admin. aide. My brother worked for Bureau of Indian Affairs after his time in Vietnam Nam and loved Alaska. He especially loved his job when he worked for Wein Air way way back when and for another rural carrier with whom he took Flat Stanley on quite an adventure including all the areas you detail in both the Liam Campbell and Kate series. The historical and cultural information is fascinating. I have never been able to travel there myself although one day we hope to. The thing is I have been burning my way through both series on my iPad. When I get to the end of the latest release I will be waiting anxiously. It already drives me nuts that I’ve finished Liam releases. My biggest reason for wanting this audio version is well not only have I exceeded my monthly amazon book personal limit implemented by myself as a form of self constraint but because to visit or pick up my children where my daughter has stayed for summer in Oxford, MS I have to drive 8-9 hours one way from our home in Texas. Radio can be slim and none through some states, especially on Sunday’s. I will be making this trip and one round trip or two from Texas to South Carolina and Virginia in the next few months. I’ve never rented or purchased an audio book. I think on a drive it would be like having dessert!
I came to your site to see what I have next to read having just finished book 7. Kate did not get to see her man and well it’s bugging me! I’m heading back to find my next read … Hoping I am fortunate enough to be selected. The only contest I recall winning was a drawing for ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ when my children were small!
Keep writing! Thank you!
Kate is very particular about her choice of men. I am very particular about my choice of reading. Kate is very innovative in protecting herself from jerks. I recently saved myself from getting shoved out of my lane into oncoming traffic by pretending to take a picture of the testosterone-poisoned other driver with my $9.99 cellphone which barely gets service even in the middle of large cities and certainly has no picture-taking capabilities. Kate(lucky lady) has Mutt. I am F.O.M. and I have a pair of rescued red heelers that have no manners at all when it comes to other people. I need an audiobook of Restless in the Grave because I am a road warrior-princess who is the single wage-earner in my household, I have no disposable income to buy anything for myself, and the libraries in my benighted community don’t have anything even remotely as good as a Shugak story, in print or otherwise, despite my continued requests. If I can donate the audiobook after I read it to my local library, I think I can generate enough interest to change that last little situation, so that there is something for a thinking woman in my area to read other than shabby-chic decorating tips and animal husbandry manuals. We just need a chance. Please.
I would like one of the Restless in the Grave audiobooks because I work as a pilot here in Alaska and can listen to it while both on the ground and in the air. Your books are so chockful of real Alaska details and you always get them exactly right. I sometimes feel like you write about my life and I love it when you mention women pilots! Rock on, Dana! I hope you write for a long, long time.
What can I say that has not already been said. I quite literally fell into reading one of your Kate series. That was it I was hooked. I have just returned from a trip to Alaska and this little Aussie (yes that’s right Australian), is hungry for a little more of Alaska. I might die waiting and be ‘restless in the grave’. She is one strong women and I love her characterization, your Liam was not bad either. Sorry I did not get to see a State Trooper in real life… Sigh!
Please may I have one, I would love to give it to my dad an avid reader who is now blind, he hooked me into audio books as a result. Hoping the sympathy vote wins me one.
