  1. Wayne J says:

After reading 18 books featuring Kate on paper, on Kindle or with my ears I feel like she is a friend. I get the feeling I know her very well as the books I have read, am reading or are in the stack to be read are those books that Kate has on her shelves or is about to buy, I too remember the expectation awaiting the latest Dresden or Codex Alera (ps. Jim we need more Harry). Even the music in my collection is many of the same artists, so I really must know her so my imagination says.
Well it’s now been quite some time since we last met when she was following Old Sam’s Quest & I feel it’s over time this “friendship” was renewed and frankly via the ears is somewhat more personal what with Marguerite being the voice of Kate ‘n’all so perhaps dear Dana I deserve a copy.

BTW having recently read your short Cheechako I kinda feel the gang of ‘em have more to tell us about their time in the Klondike do they not, perhaps there is a novel there???

I can’t be a Park Rat, but I live in the hills so far away from a big city that the stars are thick at night and we aren’t much bothered by TV because the antennae picks up two or three channels, sometimes at the same time but usually not. We can get movies from the library and pull up kitchen chairs around the monitor and play them on the computer. Just like both our neighbors within 6 miles of our gate onto the county road, we don’t get high-speed internet, and the county road has been paved for 6 years now. My husband and I both lost our old jobs on the exact same day last summer and although I am now working part-time we’ve had lots of time to work on the vegetable garden that feeds us and our two dogs. (Yes, the dogs love lettuce, green beans and tomatoes.) No one in my circle of friends and family is blind or sick, although my mother’s getting on in years and the vet says Jester is equivalently about the same age in dog years (upper-80′s) and their eyesight and hearing are beginning to fade. My well gives good water and made it through the record-breaking heat spell and drought last summer. The nearest town is not even a town, it’s a village, and its main industry is an ecologically green, several-hundred-vendor flea market every first Saturday that draws tourists seeking antiques, junque, and artsy-craftsy items they can hang on their walls or set on a shelf looking bucolic, bringing lots of economic benefits to the community and maybe one or two jobs though I wouldn’t know from personal experience. Our nearest bookstore is the annual Village Library book sale, and through my sheer good luck I found Second Star and am embarking on yet another adventure of discovery. As lucky as I am to enjoy the benefits of rural life, I still have to drive 60 miles to the nearest city for my part-time, temporary town job that pays the taxes and the light bill until either me or my spouse or both can find a job locally that will take its place. With all this luck, I could still wish for a dog riding shotgun on my commute . . . my office doesn’t allow radio, earphones, or pets, so if my luck continues and you choose me to receive an audiobook, Mutt would have to stay in the car, in the audiobook, but when she was done with her duty, I’d make sure she found a forever home in the local library so other people could share my luck. Thanks for all the joy you’ve arranged for all your fans through all your books and good works.

  3. Becky says:

I love reading about Kate. It is as simple as that. That is why I want an audio book.

  4. Mayra Martes says:

I love the character of kate. I would love to win an audio book. I can listen to the book with driving and cleaning around the house. Life has been busy so I haven’t been reading much. However, If I win an audiobook I can enjoy your books again.

  5. Caolifhionne Mears says:

If I don’t get a copy of Restless In The Grave, I’ll die.

Then I’LL be restless in the grave…

  6. Kymm says:

“Because” didn’t work the last time around, so maybe a few more words will this time.

There is something magical that happens when the right narrator and the right character come together, and that’s what’s happened with Marguerite and Kate–it’s a perfect storm. Added to that is the interest of a good story well told, and really, what more can a reader (or listener) ask for? It’s fiction at its best. Audio bliss. That’s why I’d love a copy of this. Also, I’m planning a road trip, and Kate and company would be might fine companions for the journey.

  7. Sandy Marcks says:

I only own one audio book so far and that is Outlander by Gabaldon. A Strabenow book would be a welcome addition since I have read all of your books to-date at the recommendation from Gabaldon a few years ago. I just recently joined you on Facebook and look forward to many enjoyable posts from Alaska.

  8. I like audiobooks. I like Kate. This is a no-brainer for me :-)

As I said in the previous comments, I ride the bus to work and back. 1.5 hours each day. I listen to audiobooks instead of music, which means I go through quite a few audiobooks. Bookstores and libraries are great sources, but free from the author is awesome!

  9. Mare Chapman says:

I’m nothing if not competitive. I want a copy because I’ve read all the others in the series and I LOVE Liam and Wy, and of course, Bill and Moses. I’d love nothing better than to sit in Bill’s Bar with all of them, listening to Jimmy on the jukebox while Moses pontificates about something, drinking Glenmorangie with Liam. Or as he says, ‘worshiping at its feet’. So, combine all of them with Kate and Mutt and you are as close to heaven as you can get without leaving the planet.

  10. Barbara Boucher says:

I have read straight through the Kate series up to Restless in the Grave. When I saw that both Kate & Liam are in it, I decided I needed to meet Liam. I am currently reading Better to Rest, so Restless is up next. I am also in the process of culling, cleaning out, & organizing to sell our house & move- further away from Alaska :( . This will be our first non-corporate move in 30 years, & I need motivation & distraction from this process. I know listening to Kate & Liam while I work will make this (almost) enjoyable!

  11. Alicia Liriano says:

A newby to e-books I am. Lately, they have been my “boon companions.” I left a professional position of nine years (with a 64 mile round-trip commute) that I loved for the sake of a raise and working within a mile from my home. Well, it didn’t work out and now I’m unemployed going on 4 months. After all the emotions one goes through, I welcome an escape from my reality to the wilderness of Alaska, Kate and the other cast of characters. Your books reaffirm the strength and power within us as women. I loved your statement from A Grave Denied when Kate recalled Emaa saying “…if you had power and didn’t use it, then you’d be giving it away to someone else…” it struck me as I was working out my emotions and recognized how much power I was giving away to someone else versus harnessing it and moving on…yes, different context but it worked. I read recently that the most powerful thing I can do while I find my next job was to move forward and surround myself with positive (powerful) people. An e-version of Restless in the Grave would be that mobile “boon companion” throughout my day to remind me that if Kate was anywhere near she could supply a swift kick in the pants to ensure I keep my forward perspective. This is why I would really love to win the e-book giveaway.

Thanks for the many laughs and for your wonderfully imperfect characters.

    Alicia

  12. Carol Pelosi says:

I’ve read all the Kate and Liam books, including Restless in the Grave, and actually have all of them. I guess I’m old fashioned but I enjoy holding an actual book and turning a real page. I’ve never had an audiobook but it would be fascinating to listen to the audiobook of Restless in the Grave. I would probably find that I am mispronouncing (in a my head) many names. I’ve been reading the comments for all the past giveaways and trying to think of something I could say to make my submission stand out…..but I got nuthin. I don’t live far from book stores or libraries (I’m in Maryland, just outside Washington, DC), I don’t have a long lonely commute (no commute at all actually), I don’t need it to listen to while cleaning (Why ruin a great book with cleaning? I would just plunk myself down, lean back, and listen), and my eyesight is fine for reading. I love Kate and Liam and Mutt….. I love ALL the characters but especially Kate and Mutt….. and I would be so excited to get this audiobook. I’m just hoping that no more than 8 other people submit comments!

  13. B J Zak says:

Chapter 3 or Final Attempt to sway you:
1st attempt: pouted about missing out on the “Restless in the Grave” cup giveaway at the Powell’s in Beaverton Oregon signing.

2nd attempt: went with humor about my pedi tears and gave you (honest) opinion of your talent, bared my emotions for the trials of some characters.

3rd attempt: I got started reading you from a Facebook ad. I got my friend to read you and her daughter lives in Anchorage so she started reading you. I do wonder why she did not know of an Alaskan author, but we educated her. We all now own all your books. We have your Mutt stickers (mine is on the passanger rear window). I do get lots of questions about what FOM means, so I take the time to interest new readers.

So now, what’s left? Ah, I know. Kate likes to barter services, the IRS can’t track those. My plan is to 1st get a free Restless in the Grave Audio gift then
pass it on to my friends, to get them hooked on your audio series. So see, that is a win/win thing. Kate would go for that, you know she loves to read. New readers will come rushing in, your publishers will be happy and your agent will get a awesome deal for you on the next contract negotiations.

Really what I would like to see happen is everyone that entered the contest would get a “I Read Dana Stabenow” sticker!

  14. Cindy Chase says:

Kate is one of my all-time favorite characters: a powerful, intelligent, sexy, independent woman! I am about to be unemployed and cannot afford the hardcover edition. Could’t I spend some time in a local park ( not The Park) listening to Kate’s adventures? It will inspire me to have some of my own.

Ps. If Mutt barks on audio, the dogs in Portland would love to meet her!

  15. Pat Downing says:

Hi. I am an assistant librarian in our small town and I get to see many
books, especially the new ones that come in. I have been reading your
books for a couple of years now and I really love them and look forward
to finding one I haven’t read.

We have patrons in town whose eyes are not what they use to be so we
have introduced them to audio books which they are enjoying. There
are also the patrons who commute to the city and take the audio books
to listen to to make the trip shorter. We would love to win your audio
book so that we can introduce these patrons to you and to Kate. We
are small so we have to have fund raisers to make enough money to
buy books so to win one would be delightful!
Thank you for the opportunity and by reading the posts above I know
it will be a hard decision for you!
    Pat Downing

  16. Laura Chase says:

What a wonderful way to enjoy a road trip with my 84 year old mother when I go to see her next month.. I am flying down from Anchorage to Portland (where she lives) and we are going to travel around Oregon, just her and myself.. She went to Dana’s book signing and got an autogragh when Dana was at Powells in Portland. We both love the way Dana writes and with me living in Alaska, my mother mother visits often. She can relate to the places Kate goes.. (speeding up Lake Otis and turning right onto Tudor, for instance)
    Thank you for the consideration!

  17. Andrew T. Kuligowski says:

I lectured at a conference at Alaska Pacific University awhile back. (OK, I gave two 50 minute talks sandwiched around 10 days of wandering from Denali to Seward …) Someone there suggested I might like reading about Kate – and “A Cold Day For Murder” hooked me big-time. I’ve been reading all of the Shugak series, in order – as well as Liam and the Coast Guard standalones.

Yes, the books fall under the category of “murder mystery”. But, they really fall under the category of “life”. There’s tragedy, there’s triumphs – births and deaths, daily life and special occasions … sometimes I swear that the murder is incidental to the real story in each novel!

When my daily commute lengthened from 20 minutes to 90 minutes each way, I discovered the wonders of Audio Books … and Kate’s been with me in that format, as well – as have Mutt, Jim, Bobby, Katya, and all of the Park Rats, not to mention Dana S. & Marguerite Gavin!

Yes, I’d like to have my own copy of “Restless in the Grave”, BUT win or not, I want to thank Ms. G for providing such a great voice to the characters I’ve come to know and love over the years (and Dana for giving them life).

  18. PippaW says:

I’m also on shot #4 and wondering what to say THIS time.

I did hope that I could write and say that I’d just been offered a job at the library and would then be able to promote your books (possibly donating the audio copy if I could bear to part with it) but I got a call today and I’ve not got the job.

My family are all well, including the husband who looked as if he was having a heart attack 2 weeks ago… and I’m back to full time taxi driver and failing at home making (my room would make Johnny feel welcome)….

So……….. I’m left with android Kate unless you rescue me. Please.

  19. Paul says:

I’m an audiobook addict, with OCD. I listen to audiobooks EVERY chance I get. And when I get hooked on an author I get everything I can by them and LISTEN until my ears bleed (well, maybe not bleed, but at least turn a nice pink). A friend of mine gave me a Terry Pratchett audiobook (Thud – a crime novel set in his Fantasy realm the Discworld) and boom! I was hooked. I now have every audiobook of his available in the US (including “The Sea and Little Fishes” in the Legends collection.) However, I’ve gone through all of his novels and am looking for a new author to become obsessive about. Then along comes “Restless in the Grave.” Sounds good, plus it’s set in Alaska, which I have a growing interest in since my brother just spent 3 years there, and every time I visit him we sit around and he tells stories of this adventures up there. I’d be really nice to get introduced to a new author and hear more about Alaska at the same time. It’d be fantastic if I won.

  20. Bob Reed says:

I just finished my first Dana Stabenow book, Though Not Dead, on my way back from a three week trip to Alaska. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel like I have a good handle on Kate Shugak, and I really wish I’d met Old Sam. I will look at earlier books to see if he’s there.
As I read about Kate driving down the Seward Highway past Beluga Point and staying in a townhouse on Westchester Lagoon, I could picture those places, because I had driven down the Seward Highway, watched the tide come in past Beluga Point, stayed in a motel on Spenard Lake, and birded around Westchester Lagoon. I kept waiting for her to eat breakfast at Gwennie’s, but alas, she had other plans.
While the description of the places was good, nothing beats being there.
I commute 70 miles every work day, and I listen to books on CD as I drive. I would really like to listen to Restless in the Grave soon.
You have a terrific ability to weave a tale that draws me in. Regardless of the outcome of this little contest, I will read more of your books.

  21. Cass Harris says:

I would like an audio book – to share with my hubsand. I have read some of the “Kate” books to him and he loves them — we have also listened to a few on tape and he really loves the speaker. My hubsand done not read for pleasure – so they only way he can join my world is if I have an audio book.
    Thank You
    Cass

  22. Cynthia Hubbard says:

I would like the audio book of Restless in the Grave because…well, although we’re having a cool spell today (only 99 degrees), we’re supposed to go back to triple digits tomorrow, so it would be nice to get lost in a world where it snows and gets cold. Even if I win, I know I won’t get the book immediately, but this is the southern United States so those rotten temperatures will be around until September! Help me make it through the summer (please)!

  23. I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but I’ve only recently stumbled over — literally! — a novel in the Kate Shugak series. (This happened at the local library.) Believing that all things happen for a reason, I picked the book up, browsed through it, took it to the info desk, and inquired as to whether or not it could be checked out.
    It could.
    I did.
I finished the book over night — I couldn’t put it down! Yes, Dana Stabenow is an author whose novels I’ve invited as permanent tenants in my home library. This past week I’ve been haunting the local bookstores and, where necessary, placing orders. (Now, I have a stack to read through and relishing every single moment! Nightly I journey with Mutt, Kate, Jim, Johnny, Sam, the four Aunties . . . the list goes on.)
What would be more lovely than listening to Marguerite Gavin’s fabulous voice portraying the characters and listening to the story line with all its nuances while driving home from work? Nothing — absolutely nothing — could top it. I’d be the only calm driver in Albuquerque, NM during rush hour traffic. I’d probably also be the only driver with a smile on my face, listening to the audio book and not being fazed by the 100+ degree temperatures we’re currently experiencing.
Whether I win an audio book or not — I’m delighted to have “discovered” Dana’s novels! Thank you so much, Ms. Stabenow for such well-written literature! Your characters pulsate with life and jump off the page.

  24. Janet Ghilarducci says:

My love life is entirely being lived vicariously through Kate. And since Jim was out of town for most of “Though Not Dead”, I am desperate for the “Restless in the Grave”!

  25. Gerry Showalter says:

I love Alaska, the names, the places and the frontier wilderness. Kate is Alaska to so many of us who will only be there is our imaginations. Reading is one form of imagining. Listening takes imagining to a different environment. One of sound, hopefully not in the twilight zone but the Alaskan zone!!

  26. Amanda J says:

As I was sitting down at my computer this morning, trying to think of what I might write about–my love of Jim? My envy of Kate’s brazen, spitfire attitude? The awesome landscapes painted with words? I wasn’t sure any of that would be a winning bunch of words strung together. EVERYONE loves that stuff about the Kate series. But, then I was struck with some inspiration, literally. My son’s 12 pound cat, Binky jumped from his carpeted pole to my head (he usually hits the back of the chair–for 4 years now, without missing!) He perched for a moment and then proceeded to launch off of my head, with every claw on his feet employed, I felt my head shred in several areas. I felt as if I had been scalped in a grizzly mauling. Though it was not a malicious attack, dear Binky would have been in trouble had Mutt been around. I was desperately wishing I had an all-knowing, shaggy soulmate that I could just signal with one look and she would seek out the offender and make them pay. Since I do not, an audiocopy would be great–I can dream about having a K9 guardian for those days that I am attacked pre-caffeine by the family feline. And, maybe if I played it on the CD player out loud (educating Binky about the dangers of messing with the woman of the house), the cat would realize how lucky he is — and how fast I could call the local Humane Society and find a hairy henchman!

  27. JoAnne T. says:

I am just going to state the facts: I want one because you have been my favorite author since 2006, when I first read one of your books, I want one because Restless in the Grave is the only Kate Shugak book I have not yet read, I want one because it’s been exactly 15 months since I read Though not Dead and I am going to have to get a Stabenow fix soon!

  28. J. H. Meyer says:

Dear Dana…I would LOVE to win an audio book!
I’m blind in the top half of my left eye, (not too good in the right either) so reading is difficult.
But I’ve borrowed from the library & love Kate Shugak!
Thank you for your generous offer & the opportunity to win a new audio book.
There’s a lot of worthy commentary here…so whoever wins will be ‘doing a happy dance’, I’m sure! :o )

  29. Dana says:

Comments on this post are now closed. Winners’ names will be posted on stabenow.com tomorrow. Thank you all for playing!
