Reader’s Companions

So I had this wonderful idea of creating a reader’s companion for my novels, beginning with the Liam Campbell novels when they were published by Gere Donovan Press in e-format. The plan was I would look at each chapter of each book and find something interesting and then go on line and find some articles or pictures or videos about that interesting something, link to them and write up some commentary to go with them. It was a way of creating original content for each of the books, to provide something new for the fans, and maybe hook some new fans into the books in the process.

Kate Shugak Series

Liam Campbell Series

Unlike the Star Svensdotter series and the Kate Shugak series, when I started writing Liam back in 1997 I knew this time that I was in fact writing a series, and so I deliberately constructed a slow, multiple-novel reveal about their history, Wy’s Yupik heritage and her air taxi business, and Liam’s Air Force brat childhood, fractured parentage, marriage and choice of profession.

I also built a large ensemble cast of colorful characters whose own backstory could be exploited in future novels: Bill the bartender/magistrate, Moses the drunk shaman, Wy’s abused foster son Tim Gosuk whose girlfriends keep dying, eager-beaver Trooper Diana Prince, reporter Jo Dunaway, techno-geek Jim Wiley, the Machiavellian USAF Colonel Charles Campbell.

The idea for the series came from the true story of two grandparents and a grandchild getting stuck on the Denali Highway one February and freezing to death because the troopers didn’t respond to calls about them. The real trooper in charge was tried and convicted of negligence. I decided I just had to redeem him in the character of Liam Campbell.
